GRAND SUMO: Final Day of the July 2025 Tournament – GRAND SUMO Highlights

[Music] [Music] Hello and welcome to Grand Sumo Highlights. We made it to day 15, Senuraku, the Nagoya Bash show from the IG Arena. And the U show is up for grabs between three men, all rank and filers, Kotto, Aishki, and Kusano are both one off the pace. But today, Kotto Sho and Aishki, they will fight before we see Kusano. So, who’s going to decide the tournament? It’s an exciting day ahead. So with a click of the key, let’s get to the action on the final day of the Nagoya tournament. We kick off with Shishi and Asakoru. They both have losing tournaments, but they’re finishing off well on winning notes. Shishi has won his last two, keeping his feet a bit bit better planted on the dojo. And as you he’s won four straight. in hard and fast. As a Cordu gets the right hand inside, loses that position. Moving forward well, Shishi keeps his feet planted and wins with a solid Yi-Kitty. So, finishes off well. Three straight wins for him to finish seven and eight. That drops Asa to six and nine. Shishi more than likely going back to Jurio with a losing record. Asakoru he’s okay he’ll stay in so he got the inside grip with the right hand then he lost his position taken back by Shishi moves well uses the feet cleverly and wins by Yuri Kitty now Mitaki and Toki Hayate what a wonderful tournament the former Ozeki is having nine and five going for double digits That’ll be the first time since March 2022 if he can do that. Tokihayate has a losing record, but he’s Magira 11, so he’ll stay in the division no matter what. Fast away Tokihayate. But backing up even quicker is Mitakumi. Win number 10. It’s been a while, but G’s had a solid performance this time round. He finishes 10 and five. Toki Hayate will end the day at six and nine. Long time between drinks for double digits for this man. Look how quick Toki Hayate was, but equally so. Mitakumi straight across the clay with excellent footwork. Good hand placement and just forces Tokihayate over the edge with a push. Oshidashi. Takeno and Shai step up on the clay. Both men with winning records. Probably could have been a bit better. He’s 8-6. He takes on Shai who’s 9 and5 on 499 career wins. So, can he get the 10th win to the Magic 500? Straight to the throat is Takosho. Caught in awkward position. Inside briefly is Shai. Now the throat attack again by Takenosho has Shai going back. He can’t recover. So Takosho wins. Finishes off the Nagoya tournament with a 9 and6 record. And Shai no 500 wins in his career, but he also finishes 9 and six. Good start by Takosho. Got the left in. He wants a pushing attack. He’s covered up straight away by Shai, but Shai looks kind of awkward here. He’s taken to the throat and he goes back but can’t seem to recover at all and Takenosho wins. Next up at Tommy Fuji and Chironi Tommy Fuji we’re seeing him a bit earlier this day but he’s having a wonderful tournament 10 and four. Can he boost that to 11? They’ve met three times. Chillum he’s yet to win but he’s having a good tournament at 9 and five. This should be a yotsumo battle straight away. Chilly goes for the left hand shallow as he always does. He has a solid right hand inside. No moashi grip with the right hand from a tummy Fuji, but he’s solid trying to pick up with the left hand. Now he has the right hand inside a tummy Fuji. This will favor him from this position. He’s got a bit more power than Chironomi. Can Chunomi dig in and pull something clever at the edge? He’s retreating. He goes to the edge and out. It’s Yi Kitty Aami Fuji. Win number 11. Finally producing the sumo we saw from him a couple of years ago. And he finishes with a strong number. Chironomi nine and six. Corto Ajo the rookie takes on Chio Sharma. Both with losing records. There’s mom and dad. They’re here to support a couple of their boys. Cotto Ajo in his debut and Kotto Shoo going for the US. Good two- arm thrust straight away from Chio Shoma. But Kotto gets the left hand inside, keeps the solid grip, moves forward. Well, rock and roll by Chio Shoma one way then the other. He has a left hand inside grip. A leg trip attempt by both. And eventually it’s an overarm grip by Copjo to pick up an Aatag victory. Very tight of the edge. They’re both looking around at see if the Shimpano judges have decided it’s a bit too close to call but pretty definite. Chill Shom went out and down first and Cotto Ajo picks up his sixth win. Well, a real shame for Chio Sharma. Just one win in the 15 days. First time meeting between the two and the rookie wins. Wins by overarm throw. Mom and dad will be happy. Well, of course they are. Now, another rookie who’s having a wonderful tournament. Fujinoa, 9 and five, takes on a man with the same score who for a couple of days ago was in the Yusho race, Ichi Yamamoto. They meet for the first time. Fast man on the left. Good pusher thruster on the right. In fast is Fujinoa. Thrusting is Ichi Yamamoto. Keeps up the pressure on Fujinoa. He keeps retreating and then eventually slaps down. Hataki Ki win number 10. Ichiamoto. Still a good tournament. Nine and six at Mashida 8, but the Mashida 14 rookie in his debut gets double digits in wins. A slap down. He’s going to be someone to be reckoned with in the top division on a regular basis. Not big, but he’s fast. He’s hard to get a hold of and he’s got good lateral movement. He doesn’t want to get into those habits of pulling going backwards too often, but he wins here by slapdown. How do you feel about winning the fighting spirit prize? I’m happy. Did you know you had to win the bout to get it? Yes. It got me pumped up. How was your bout with Ichyamamoto? Despite the offensive and defensive maneuvers, I was able to fight calmly. There was a lot of applause every day for your spirited sumo ranches. How do you feel about it? I’m happy to be wrestling in the Makunochi division. I want to show even better bouts in the future and get the audience excited. We move on to Kaio and Me. Same record. It’s not a good one. They’re both three and 11. Just like to see him move forward. He’s better at sumo that way than retreating. Me wants the left hand inside. They’ve only met once before and May was the winner. comes in hard, may say. Almost pulled down there by Kaio who’s moving forward today and he retreats and pulls. They stare off into the middle of the dojo. Now deep and under is Kaio and he wins. Oshi Chaoshi the frontal push down victory for Kaio. Just his fourth win and me drops to three and 12. He’s Mashida 16. So he will be going back to Jurio. me stays in the top division cuz he’s a Musittita five. But a good way to end the tournament for a man who’s struggled throughout it pulling going backwards. Then he starts to move forward. Gets into a good position here. Kaio starts to press Meay back, but then he pulls again and he decides, well, let’s try this moving forward business again. And he does. He grabs the arm briefly. Now he gets in and under and has Messay in trouble. Hi and Roger. The only two men on the final day that are both seven and seven going against each other. One’s going to be happy. The other one won’t be. The winner will get Kachi Koshi. The loser Maki Koshi. They’ve met once before. Hi was the winner. Mashita five and a 10. Deep and quick and in fast is Hadumi. He takes Roger to the edge who tries a pivot throw but he was already out. Yori Taoshi the frontal crush out for Hiadoomi. No Monoi so he gets Kachi Koshi and it’s a Maki Koshi for Roger. [Applause] Exciting tournament we’re having and it’s the last bout in the first half. Saranumi and Kim Bosan step up on the dojo. Not numbers that they were looking for before it started. Four and 10 and three and 11. History does favor Saturnumi. The Kim Bosan’s pushing attack is lethal when it’s on. He starts out with a two- arm thrust. Takes Saturnumi. Well, that was a training exercise for Kim Bosan. picked up his fourth win. Both men conclude the tournament with four and 11 records. So they’ll both take a tumble in the buns next time out, but we look forward to an improvement in September from both of them. Now we have Onokatu and Hanumi on the clay a bit disappointing six and eight but a win here won’t make it look too bad at Masida three hit an umi well he’s decided to stay in even with the leg injury just the one win to show but he’s shown perseverance big slap big hit now a pushing attack by gets in quickly Both hands inside. So he has Morashi. Can he do anything with it? On cuts is slowly moving him back. Retreating is Hanumi. He loses the bandage on that leg, but he still moves forward with all that annoyance hanging off the foot and the calf. He gets rid of that, but he also gets rid of Onakatu to pick up just his second win of the tournament. Onatsu finishes at six and nine. And happy to say that Hidoni finally gets a win on the final day in the tournament. [Applause] And don’t forget the prize money. Little Kencho envelope for him. And don’t forget the cigar. Now Midori Fuji and Abi both with winning records. Nine and five. Abidori Fuji Abby 8 and six Mashida 12 and Mashida 2. They both have two wins against each other and Abby has won the last two times they’ve met. Well, he steps to the side. Midori Fuji trying a hanker which did not work. Abby just puts out the elbow. Midori Fuji hangs off it and Abi uses it to push him out. Oshidashi, they both finished nine and six. Oh, and Haku Oho, six and eight, eight and six. Mirror records first time meeting. He’s a pusher thruster. Has more washi technique. One thing he doesn’t want is to allow that man to get his left hand inside. Very quick touchy fast away Hakoho. No inside position though. He’s kept away by Oho. Oho just pounding into Hakoho. Big win. Kashi thrust out. So win number seven for Oho. Haku. Oh gets eight and seven to finish this tournament. Good hit by Haku Oho, but the thrusting attack keeping him away doesn’t allow him to get that favorite left hand inside grip. Keeping it up all the time Oho and eventually wins by thrust out. Skiidashi Gonoyama and Wakamoto. Gonoyama 8 and six. Wakamaru six and eight. They’ve met seven times. Goryama’s won a couple. A tournament where Wakamoto has retreated a lot. Too much. Need to see him moving forward. Big hit as always. Goroyama. But Wakamoaru pounds back with some thrusting. He’s at the edge and out. Solid skidashi win by Gordoyama to pick up his ninth and a ninth loss for Wakamoto. The Mashidita won. [Music] Big Tati again from Gonoyama. Slams into Wakamoaru. Tries to get the left hand inside, but he’s denied because Gonoyama keeps him away. Retreating Wakamokaru to the edge and thrust out wind. Now the first of our bouts of the day and what a bout it is. It could be decided here. Also Sho they’ve met before. Alniski was the winner today. Can Kotto Sho bounce back and take the US? A Mashida 15, a Mashida one. It can be decided here if Aishki wins. It’s a playoff. But how many men will be in the playoff? [Applause] No thrusting attack put to sho but he takes down Alishki for the Y show. Suki toshi thrust down. The man from Sarakotake Baya has won his first show. Unbelievable. Only three men could win it. a chance today and mom’s shedding a tear or two. Dad is being congratulated by those around him. A migr who trained so hard with Kotto Zakura. They’re very close friends. Well, Aishki disappointment no doubt with the loss, but fair to say we’re going to be seeing a lot of Alishki in the future. No thrusting attack cotto. He goes straight inside and levers up al-Niski. Then slaps and pushes from the side to win by Tsukio toshi. A thrust down for his 13th win. A 13-2 record for the Migos of 15 and a show and a couple of special prizes. The Kto and the Shikun show. Today’s sumo match could have decided the title. How did you feel going into it? I wanted to go all out, but my body couldn’t keep up. So, it didn’t work out. How was having bouts with top ranked wrestlers for 15 straight days? It was a very tense 15 days. How did you feel about competing for the title? I think this experience will lead to future opportunities. I consider my sumo career to be just beginning. So I want to utilize this experience in the future. Well, we move on. The US show’s been decided, but Kusano who well he had an opportunity if Alishki had won, but he still wants to finish well as he takes on the Kasubi. [Music] Kusano 11 and three in his debut tournament. Takiasu is looking really well at nine and five. Komasubi. [Applause] This is all about speed and strength. Well, the Kasubi slams into Kuseno and takes him back. Look at the thrusting attack from the Komasubi. Takayyasu relentless with his piston-like attack and wins by Skiashi. Wow. Well, Kasano certainly knows he met his match today. Still a strong tournament 11 and four. Takayasu moves up to 10 and five. Relentless with his thrusting attack. Takasu. [Applause] A welldeserved round of applause for that young man in his debut. But gee, he cpped the wroth of Takayyasu today. just did not give up. Pounding away, thrusting, thrusting. Casano could not get in at all. Well done both men. Will we see him up a rank? How do you feel about winning prizes? Well, I’m happy. How do you feel about winning two prizes at a time? I think remaining in the title race until the very end was regarded highly. How do you want to build on this experience in the future? I’ve just started as a newcomer, so I want to make the most of it in my future sumo career. What do you want to brush up? I want to work on fixing things like my tachi and letting my upper body rise as I did during today’s bout. Now time for the Cory Sunyaku bouts. The last three bouts on the day signified in olden days by the winners getting the arrows, the string and the bow. Well, because we have the yum toki at the end of proceedings each day and on the last day no bow is given out but we do give out the strings and of course an opportunity for the arrows. now as they step up for the arrows or Tamawashi. They’ve met four times before, couple of wins each, but gee, what a wonderful tournament by the veteran. Big win over the Yokazuna going for 11 wins taking on Oshama who struggled at Shin Komasubi just three and 11 in low pushing under the arms of the opponent Oshama thrusting away settling in the middle of the dojo now he gets attacked to the chin gets the outside grip it becomes a yotsumo battle they’re at the edge it’s a battle of who can win and pivot or is it going to be moving forward sumo from Tamashi he’s at the edge edge lifts him over and wins by Yori Kitty. Another win for the veteran. What an inspiration. 11 and four and handles OA another loss. Three and 12 and he’s now about to receive the arrows as a part of the Koreyaku final three bouts here on Centuraku. He’s just looked so strong this tournament. I mean, he’s always lethal with his thrusting attack, but it’s the strength of his pushes this time round. And today, whilst it got into a a bout on the Moashi, which is not really Tamashi’s go, he can certainly win, but not every day if he had to fight Yuzumo. But here he is, and there’s a very crucial point here. He pulls OMA into his own body at the edge right about here. See how he pulls there and then he lifts. Yori kitty. Wonderful. You achieved your 11th win with a powerful performance today. What are your thoughts on winning a prize? It was a truly enjoyable 15 days. I did want to win the title, but I’m glad I had a good time. Were you aiming for the title? Yes, I got a little frustrated and couldn’t perform as I had planned in the first half, but I’m really glad I was able to win in the end. It was said that your sumo match with Yokosuna was highly evaluated. What are your thoughts? I’m really glad about that. Getting a Kimoshi by beating a new Yokosuna in a new arena. I’m really happy. It’s time for a battle of the seiwake. Wakataga Kag and Kirishima. Wakataga Kag nine and five. Kirishima 8 and six. And this man started with four wins, but he’s lost his last four in a row. Momentum could be with Wakataga Kag even though he lost yesterday to Onos. I rate the sumo a little higher. Wakataga Kag this time round. goes in and he deflects. Kittishima straight at the Tati. Moves quickly across the dojo to win by Yori Kitty. Finishes with 10 wins, 10 and five. Kittishima eight and seven. A little disappointing finish for him. But Wakataga Kag now makes a solid run at Ozeki promotion. He got 12 in the previous tournament, now 10 here. He only needs 10 in the next tournament to be theoretically promoted to Ozeki. It’s amazing what one win means. And this one is vital. All he’s got to do now is turn up next time and get 10 or more. Koshima is going to be tough for his promotion. He’d have to have a huge tournament, win it with a massive number in September, but that’s next time round. Now, the final bout here. on Senuraku and it’s the Yokazuna and the Ozeki the way it should be. Normally we’d like two Yokazuna. Maybe we can get that next tournament. Olo not his best effort but gee he’s still got 10 wins and he can make it 11 by a win here. K Zakura not Ozeki numbers but he has to be boyed by Kotto’s win. Slamming into Ono. Onato right hand in takes Kotto Zakura out. little crab walk as he’s so good at on to pick up a win number 11 kto zakura that’s three eight and sevens in a row as ozi so well done onto not your best tournament but gee there would be many out there who would like to finish with 114 record but I guess we expect so much more he doesn’t do well in Nagoya and Shin Yokazuna invariably don’t always do well historically. There have been some greats that have not had good numbers in their debut, but he still finishes off well to finish with 114. He’ll just have to bounce back next time. There it is. The U show winner. His debut victory. Cult gets the certificate and of course the Emperor’s Cup finishing with a 13-2 record beating Alishki today in regulation to seize the trophy in his time for the first time. Congratulations Kot Sho. How did you feel when he held the cup for the first time? I still can’t quite believe it yet. But I’m very happy. How do you feel about facing today’s bout knowing that you will win the title if you win it? I went in determined not to overdo it, drawing on my previous experience. You had some regrets at the tournament two years ago. How did you overcome them? Well, I figured there’s no point in overthinking it, so I just went for it. And you pushed down Alishki, who couldn’t lift his head. How was that small? After standing up, my body moved unconsciously. So, I think my body worked well. How did you feel when you won? Well, I was relieved to have been able to complete the 15 days. It seems like your sumo was getting better every day. But what do you think went well in this tournament? I think the results came from my mindset of doing my best every day and striving to do even better the next day. This will return you to the top ranks of the Makunochi division. What kind of sumo do you want to show in the future? I want to work hard to improve my strength and become a sumo wrestler who is supported by many people. [Applause] What are your goals for the rankings? I want to aim for syaku and then keep my sight set on even higher goals. Well, there it is. An exciting tournament. We’ve just witnessed full 15 days of action. A new Yokazuna launched. an exciting rank and filer who will go on and of course the surprise win. The next tournament is on the 14th to the 28th of September. The buns cake comes out on the 1st of September. Thanks for being with us through the 15 days. On behalf of all the crew, see you in September. Bye for now.
