Thailand, Cambodia agree on ceasefireーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS
Malaysian Prime Minister Anmar Ibrahim was the one who announced Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a truce after days of clashes along their disputed border. Both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding as follows. One, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from 24 hours local time midnight on 28th July 2025 tonight. This is a vital first step towards a deescalation and the restoration of peace and security. Malaysia. This year’s ASEAN chair mediated the ceasefire talks. Acting Thai Prime Minister Pum Tam Wayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet attended the meeting held near Koala Lumpur. In addition to the ceasefire, a joint statement also says the two sides agreed to convene an informal meeting of regional military commanders set for Tuesday morning. US officials also took part in the peace talks after President Donald Trump reached out to both sides. Representatives from China also attended the meeting. Thai and Cambodian forces began fighting last week. More than 30 people, including civilians, were reportedly killed. We’re joined by NHK World’s Limong, who’s standing in front of the Malaysian prime minister’s official residence where the talks took place. Lingong, how did Thailand and Cambodia manage to reach a ceasefire in less than a week? Well, first of all, it seems they wanted to stop the conflict from dragging on any further. Mosai has stressed their sovereignty claims, but the fighting caused civilian casualties, making the situation increasingly undesirable. Another key factor was President Trump. He’s been threatening to impose tariffs of 36% on the two countries and he made it clear the US wouldn’t sign any trade deals with them unless the conflict was resolved. Prolonged trade negotiation would inevitably hurt their economies, something both sides wanted to avoid. Meanwhile, China also took part in the meeting. has been backing Cambodia both politically and economocally. With two superpowers sending delegation, it became almost impossible for Thailand and Cambodia not to reach a ceasefire. Now that there is an agreement, will the military clashes stop? That’s the big questions and exactly what both countries and the international communities are focused on. Clashes along the border were reported just hours before the leaders were set to begin the ceasefire talks. Territorial disputes between Thailand and Cambodia have persisted for over a century. Armed clashes broke out in 2011, 3 years after a border temples was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, leaving more than 20 dead. People in Thailand are angry not just with Cambodia but also with their own government that follows a leaked phone call between then Thai Prime Minister Petong Tan Sinawad and Cambodia’s senior president Hansen. In the call, Pong Tan appeared to disparage a senior Thai military commander and appease Cambodia leading to her suspension as prime minister. Meanwhile, Cambodia has repeatedly blamed Thailand for starting the recent fighting. Ponen argued that it claimed border is the legitimate one. So the laser hostility not only leave the border dispute unresolved, they have also deepened animosity between the two nation. It remains unclear whether Thailand and Cambodia can men their relation anytime soon. Thank you, Lingong. That was NHK World Limong in Koala Lumpur. In Bangkok, a gunman fatally shot five people at a fresh food market before turning the weapon on himself. Incident took place Monday afternoon at Otaka Market. Police are investigating the motive, including whether the perpetrator has links to the market. I was shocked at first and now I also feel sorry for those who lost their lives. It’s really scary. It’s really dangerous. The market sells local fresh fruit and vegetables and is located near the popular Jatujac market. A shooting at a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok two years ago left two people dead and five injured. And that wraps up our bulletin. I’m Ross Unable in Bangkok.
