Thai, Cambodian commanders hold talks amid fragile ceasefireーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS

Military commanders from Thailand and Cambodia held talks in the border area on Tuesday amid wrangling over whether the truce was holding. Both side said they agreed to maintain the ceasefire and halt troop movements and establish coordination teams to resolve problems immediately. The two countries agreed to an unconditional ceasefire on Monday in talks mediated by this year’s Asen chair Malaysia. It took effect at midnight. But the Thai side claimed Cambodian troops had launched further attacks in multiple areas and its forces responded. Acting Prime Minister Pum Tami said the Cambodian actions constituted a violation of the ceasefire agreement. Cambodia’s defense minister Ta insisted the Cambodian army had strictly abided by the ceasefire. The ceasefire agreement came after 5 days of clashes along the disputed border that left dozens of people dead, including civilians. Authorities in Pakistan say security forces have killed three militants linked to an attack on Chinese nationals last November in the country’s largest city, Karachi. The attack was carried out by a Pakistani guard at a textile factory who shot and wounded two Chinese workers. Officials say the three militants were killed in the hideout in a raid which started late Sunday night. All three were members of the Tariq Taliban Pakistan or TTP. Chinese nationals in Pakistan have increasingly come under attack by Muslim groups. They claim China’s projects under its belt and road initiative unfairly exploit local resources. In October, two Chinese nationals were killed in a bomb attack near Karach’s international airport by militants seeking independence for Blojasthan province. We turn to India now where a sendoff ceremony has been held for young people heading to Japan to work as assistant English language teachers and exchange coordinators. The event took place at the Japanese embassy in New Delhi on Friday. 14 people are going to Japan this year under a government sponsored initiative that started in 1987. The program aims to promote foreign language education and international exchange. Japan has decided to accept young Indians in the role as ties between the two countries are getting closer. This is a major step towards stimulating India Japan exchanges at the grassroots level and is indispensable for further strengthening Japan India rel creations. I really hope that I can do my little part because one bridge is not enough but multiple little bridges will definitely help get India and Japan closer than ever before. The 14 Indians will be sent to schools and local governments across Japan. That wraps up our bulletin. I’m Chola Panzaner in Bangkok.
