The leaders of India and the Philippines have announced a strategic partnership to bolster defense among other areas. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. held talks in New Delhi on Tuesday. Marcus is paying a 5-day state visit to India. This is the first time in 18 years that a Philippine president has visited India as a state guest. We agreed to continue leveling up our collaboration in defense and security. We expressed satisfaction over the rapid pace of the Philippines ongoing defense modernization. Modi said the two countries have decided to take their relations to the level of a strategic partnership. He added that a comprehensive action plan is being formulated to turn the partnership’s potential into results. The talks come amid China’s stepped up maritime expansion in the South China Sea, where Manila is locked in a territorial dispute with Beijing. Against the backdrop, India and the Philippines held their first ever joint naval exercises in the disputed waters on Sunday and Monday. The Philippine military says the two-day maneuvers featured a comprehensive series of high-level operations aimed at strengthening tactical coordination and joint maritime capability. A person of Japanese descent left behind in the Philippines at the end of World War II has expressed hope ahead of his first trip to Japan. The trip is being sponsored by a Japanese government program for people in the Philippines born to Japanese fathers before and during the war. Take Hay, one of the descendants, held a press conference in Manila on Tuesday. Take is one of about 50 stateless people in the Philippines who claim Japanese parentage. They’re seeking recognition by Tokyo. Take plans to go to Osaka to visit his relatives and his father’s grave. I hope that I can visit the place where my father was born. It’s been my longtime dream to go to Japan. The 82-year-old was born to a Japanese father who worked as an engineer and a Filipino mother, but his father went missing before he was born. When they met in April in Manila, Take called on Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigaru for more help for descendants like himself. Ishiba said he would work to ensure that they obtained Japanese nationality and a visit to Japan as soon as possible. Take visited his mother’s grave to tell her about his first trip to Japan, which begins on Wednesday. The cost of the trip is being covered by the government program for descendants.
