A 10-day military drill in Taiwan in July, the longest ever, was aimed at countering any military threat from China. With Taipei under increasing pressure from Beijing, the Lingo administration has placed greater emphasis on strengthening what’s known as military civilian cooperation. NHK World’s Matsuda Tommoi has this report. During the drills, training was conducted at three of this supermarket stores in Taiwan. [Music] Cracks move quickly to get everyone into the basement on the assumption there has been a missile attack. I’m not feeling well. I want to get out of here. Please hold on a little longer. Let’s wait for instructions from the police. The CRS receive telephone instructions directly from the fire department. They practice fast a skills on customers. [Music] It’s important to train so that you know where to evacuate. I think it helps you prepare mentally. Earthquakes and typhoons are common in Taiwan. So, knowing how to react in times of disaster is second nature. [Music] In the northern city of Shinju, a coat at the fire department aims to train civilians as disaster prevention specialists. About 70 people are taking part. These specialists are tasked with assisting disaster victims and educating people about how to stay safe. The Linda administration aims to double the number of specialists to 100,000 by the end of this year. Changing is a home appliance repairman. He’s also the leader of a local community organization. Please call an ambulance. Ian was joined by his wife. He says he was able to update his knowledge on life saving and rescue that he learned about in school and during military service. Whether it’s a natural disaster, a man-made disaster, or even war, we can minimize the damage if we raise awareness of disaster prevention. Efforts to deepen community spirit are essential. He and his neighbors help rake up dead leaves around emergency shelters. They also take part in drils and upgrade evacuation maps. Even if there is no war or earthquake, it is important for us to be able to rescue someone quickly.
