Analysis: Big hurdles remain for Russia-Ukraine ceasefire ーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS

US President Donald Trump says he’s trying to organize a bilateral summit between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. He made the announcement after meeting Wimir Zalinski at the White House. Trump claims he called Russian President Vladimir Putin at the conclusion of talks on Monday with Zalinski and other European leaders about security guarantees for Ukraine. The White House posted a photo on social media purporting to show Trump on the phone with Putin. Zalinski told reporters a specific date hasn’t been set. If Russia proposed to president of the United States bilateral and then we will see that the result of bilateral and then it can be the trilateral. Trump suggested Putin has agreed to the security guarantees. He says much of the burden would go to Europe with coordination from the United States. Zilinski says he’s ready to discuss all sensitive issues including territory. For more, we’re joined by NHK world senior commentator and former Moscow bureau chief Amahido. Now Trump has been engaged in a flurry of diplomacy with Putin and Zalinski, albeit separately. Why now? Uh Trump had been pressuring Putin to agree on the ceasefire by August 8th. He then suddenly set up a summit with the Russian leader and he his talks with Zalinski appeared much more positive compared to February. Trump says he is trying to arrange summit between Putin and Zalinski. But the big question is whether that can actually happen and under what conditions, right? So progress at least but still much more to be done. Yes, we still don’t know the full details of the uh Trump Putin summit on Friday, nor the US leaders talks on Monday with Zalinski and his European counterparts. Moving forward, territory will be likely to be a key focal point. Putin reportedly wants to wants Uklina to concede to areas in the eastern Dumbbas region and to recognize Lusia’s sovereignity over Crimea in the south. He also reportedly proposed a ceasefire along the current front line in the two region of the southern Ukine but Uklan leaders do not want to make any territorial concessions. Zanski says it is a sensitive issue that should be discussed between himself, Trump and Putin. Another key issue is security guarantee for Ukraine. Trump is suggesting a framework where Europe to takes the lead and United States provided provides support but the details are currently unclear and the ceasefire cannot be leed without security guarantees. Now, Germany’s chancellor says Putin and Zalinski will meet within two weeks. Can Ukraine’s backers make the necessary preparations in such a short time frame? They will walking around the clock. No doubt. NATO Secretary General Mark Lut told Fox News that 30 countries including Britain, France, and Japan will be meeting online in the next few days. They will be pushing for broad consensus on the key issue. Putin is an extremely for formidable negotiator and Zilinski will surely have his work cut out.
