Japan’s 50-year rule of Taiwan: The generation born in the colonial era

Japan began an experiment to turn Taiwan into a model colony in 1895, after the First Sino-Japanese War. Key infrastructure was built and the economy was transformed. Taiwanese were largely treated as Japanese subjects and assimilated. In 1945, Japan’s surrender in World War II ended its rule of Taiwan. More than 300,000 Japanese, who had resettled or were born in Taiwan, were repatriated. What became of the group called “wansei”, as well as the Taiwanese who lived through Japanese colonisation? CNA’s Michiyo Ishida finds out.

  1. 80+ years since the demise of japan rule – all these pro japan Taiwanese should have all died, the problems afflicting Taiwan today are the woke banana minority DPP buggers licking america boots cheh

  2. Pity, pity, pity…then again what do these colonist colony born expect…like all other colonists eg British who comes, conquer and rules… then in defeat must be expell!!!!

  3. I think instead of trying to give a good spin, we should openly talk about Japanese war crimes of WW2. We should talk about the Nanjing Massacre, the Parit Sulong massacre in Japanese-occupied Malaya, the Laha massacre, the Changjiao massacre, Unit 731, where the Japanese tried to perfect bio warfare and tested it on Chinese, and the Japanese massacre of Hui Muslims in China… Japanese should say sorry, it will help all asea ..

  4. 反抗的都被杀了 剩下的都是不反抗的

    依據1981 年臺北市文獻委員會副主任委員王國璠編著的『臺灣抗日史』中記載,被日本人屠殺的臺灣人約有四十萬人。日治前期25年日本連續施以血腥手段恐怖屠殺,不是屠村就是抄家滅門。

    日本人屠殺臺灣人的幾起較知名事件(部分資料摘錄自「日本武士道揭謎」臺灣日本綜合研究所所長/許介鱗):

    桃園三角湧大嵙崁大燒殺:罹難人數約22260人;

  5. The Japanese government try to stop other countries to attend Chinese victory parade that shown that Japan still want to challenge China and disregard past crimes.

  6. It's common knowledge in Southeast Asia some of the 'Japanese' soldiers could speak Hokkien and communicate with local Chinese because they were actually Taiwanese.

  7. I am an ESL teacher teaching foreign students, such as those from China and Japan. One of the rules in teaching them(Japanese) is not to introduce them to or mention anything about World War 2. So, in general, the bad history of their country was not taught to normal Japanese. The people who learn them are definitely the ones who love to read books or online.

  8. Taiwanese were clearly treated as second-class colonial subjects, with systematic discrimination, exploitation, and limited rights during colonialism.

During WWII, conditions worsened with forced labour, military conscription, and comfort women exploitation—which came close to enslaved labour practices.

At the same time, Japanese rule left a mixed legacy: modernization and development alongside oppression and cultural suppression.

The real taiwanese weren't happy nor have real freedom under Japan rule. Having said so, those were old colonial days – hindsight is always 20/20.

  9. Had Japanese continue their rule to today, I would have travelled from SG to KL via Shinkansen already, and the highway and roads will be well maintained. and every Singaporean after receiving Japanese education would have better manners, become considerate and environmentally conscious

  10. This sounds like a Japan/DPPTaiwan line of narrative. Suggestion that CNA do a documentary on the difficult times of SG under the yoke of Japan's occupation and the occupiers' atrocities, this being the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender and end of WW2 in our Pacific theatre. Afterall CNA is SG's national news broadcaster. Honouring and remembering our people of that generation, and lest we forget.

  11. Japanese occupation of Taiwan is all not bad
    They educated the people
    Build infrastructure
And set up a system of organisation

    Taiwanese companies good ?
    Competitive ? Flexible?

Much more competitive compared to Singapore companies

  12. China should do what was done to China by the Japanese and also to the collective West, because these idiots still behaves exactly like their ancestors. China should not waste time and effort on trying to get along with such people. Just give them what they deserve. We need a big fight to settle old scores and have a big reset.

  13. The IMTFE (WWII war crimes trials) was a sham. Many if not most who committed atrocities were let off or not even brought to trial. The reason given is that the US needed influential men to rebuild Japan. But if we look at how the IJA conducted the war, it was not their front line troops who were in charge of POW camps nor were the administration of conquered territories run by elite troops. Many of those 2nd tier troops were conscripts from Korea and Taiwan.

  14. Let’s not beat about the bush, many of these Taiwanese soldiers were forcibly drafted or otherwise has no other viable choice to make a living because of economic exploitation and domination by incoming Japanese colonists, sent to displace the Chinese and indigenous populations. Choosing to highlight the few brainwashed indoctrinated volunteers is pure cynicism in the current anti China atmosphere. Any infrastructure and public service implemented in Taiwan was for purely selfish reasons of colonial exploitation for the war effort.

  15. Of course, they spoke fondly of Taiwan. They were colonizers, they were privileged and local Taiwanese were second class citizens. Colonization is not philanthropy. All those buildings were not built for the locals. Stop romanticizing the colonization.

Please read the novel “The Orphan of Asia” by the Taiwanese author who was born and grew up during Japanese colonization.

  16. The people in taiwan are shameless for forgetting the atrocities the evil imperialist japanese did to the Chinese people. Never forget. Never forgive

  17. "Japen began an experiment to turn Taiwan into a model colony" Where did you lived and where have you been? What a disguising program, do you have all the people have any human decency and morality at the end time of 80 years of atrocities and brutal occupation? It was genocide executed by Japanese soldiers and government. The Occupations are/were crimes and offspring of them, more than 3 mills chines people died from their inhuman brutality. The relationship between Chinese and the Japanese during the colonial occupation era was marked by deepening racism, brutality does not see in the world. The colonial system worked as an extractive system, legitimizing the looting and killing of China/Chinese by delegitimizing indigenous innovations and knowledge systems, leading to systemic destroy the human large mount and population and the resource and properties from Chinese people. and now you asked Chines People to reward those war crimes. CNA tried to white-wash the crimes Japanese did on the Chinese Peoples. I strong demand your program to correct them and restore the true history.

  18. Any do people know that these Taiwanese soldiers committed war atrocities for their imperial Japanese masters while still be viewed as subhuman? Read a biography of Kempeitai. Very illuminating and frightening.

  19. The island belongs to China. These Japanese can leave and go anywhere the Ty want, China doesn’t want them. Only the island and anyone who think they are Chinese on Taiwan.

  20. The greatest injustice done by foreign foces the last hundred years was Japan's aggression against china. They tried every avenue to split the Chinese people, forcing them to drop their identity, culture, language, these evil intentions and their results continue in Taiwan today. Remember Abe their right wing premier? His group of militants have lots of sympathizers trying to plant discords even amongst taiwanese.splitung them into insiders and outsiders. These must be corrected for Chinese nation to survive.

  21. Taiwanese are such simps, korea was colonized by japan also for about 50 years and they don't simp this hard for japan. Spineless tawianese.

  22. I think CNA sponsored by Japanese capitals, look at it's Japan time, a lot of coverage a d promotion of Japanese narrative, Singaporean please on guard

  23. As a Taiwanese, I can say the feelings toward KMT and Japanese is mixed. I have distant relatives killed by Japanese soldiers during the occupation, and then KMT. In my generation, we learn to look forward but remember the history, learn from the history.
