20% tariff on Taiwan gives Japan, Korea an edge: Experts
Earth. Taiwan. based on the 20% number. U the first thing to notice is that it’s not at the level of countries where the white house has shown displeasure. So it’s not at the level of let’s say the India tariff schedule. um it is uh evidently uh 5% higher than the deals with South Korea and Japan. So it suggests that there is some continuing bargaining tension underneath the surface here. uh one is the size of the package of promised investments in the US to be forthcoming from Taiwan because that’s been a major feature of all of these deals and along with that is the size and composition of the promised procurement of extra goods from the United States by Taiwan. On the bilateral consequence, I am not convinced that Taiwan is going to be that significantly disadvantaged by the 5% differential and tariff levels. And for all we know, that may be revised downwards in the future. Of course, you should worry about the particulars in the deal and adjustment costs in the short term, but I don’t see this deal as something that fundamentally endangers the future of the Taiwanese economy. your uh uh effort in Taiwan has uh really achieved some unique global competitive advantages and those advantages don’t disappear overnight simply because of an adjustment in tariff rates.
Following Washington’s announcement of a 20 percent tariff on most Taiwanese goods, experts in both Taiwan and the United States on Friday weighed in on the implications of the rate being 5 percentage points higher than that imposed on Japan and South Korea, two of Taiwan’s key export competitors.
The Taiwanese expert called on the government to gather domestic industries and figure out what bargaining chips Taiwan can play in future negotiations. The U.S. scholar expressed confidence that Taiwan’s competitive advantage would not vanish overnight due to the tariff adjustment.
