Who built Japan’s economy?
Eiichi Shibusawa, known as the “Father of Japanese Capitalism,” was born in 1840.
He helped create about 500 companies, including Japan’s first national bank and the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Shibusawa believed that business must follow ethics, a philosophy he called “The Analects and the Abacus.”
In 2024, he became the new face of Japan’s 10,000 yen bill.
From samurai to capitalist — his story shaped modern Japan.
