Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, stressing the importance of upholding the UN Charter in its entirety. Lavrov warned that ignoring its principles fuels neocolonial ambitions, global instability, and regional conflicts. He highlighted the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the crisis in Ukraine, and the legacy of unresolved colonial-era problems in Africa.
Lavrov emphasized the rising role of BRICS and the SCO as symbols of a multipolar world and equal diplomacy. He called for strengthening the role of the Global South and East in the IMF and World Bank, reviving the WTO as the only legitimate regulator of multilateral trade, and keeping the G20 focused on economic matters. Referencing South Africa’s motto “Ubuntu – I am, because we are,” Lavrov expressed hope that the upcoming G20 Summit in Johannesburg will send a strong signal of unity and cooperation.
