Japan, Vietnam agree to deepen trade and security cooperation | East Asia Tonight (Apr 28)

Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba is on his first trip to Hanoi since taking office. Mr Ishiba and his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh signed four agreements covering green tech and semiconductor research. Also on East Asia Tonight: East Asia’s military spending climbs most in 15 years; North Korea confirms it sent troops to fight for Russia; China says it is “fully confident” of hitting economic growth target of about 5 per cent; Japan officially joins Exercise Balikatan as participant for the first time; and several injured in South Korea high school stabbing incident.

    Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Taipei on April 26, 2025, as part of an opposition rally against Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te. The Kuomintang (KMT), which organized the rally, claimed that more than 200,000 supporters attended the event.

    The rally is the latest episode in a controversial campaign to recall legislators. The island has been embroiled in the campaign, backed by Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which threatens the recall of 34 lawmakers from the mainland China-friendly KMT. The KMT, which has not held the presidency since 2016, has 52 of Taiwan’s 113 legislative seats.

    International laws are very clear on South China Sea:
    – parts of it belong to some ASEAN countries including Vietnam 🇻🇳,
    – the rest of it is the international water,
    – no part of it belongs to China🇨🇳 or Taiwan🇹🇼.

    Under US pressure ,bully and morkery , Japan is still pro US. Similar to CNA. Japan co-operations in trade but they have to put military cooperation too. Too agitated China

    China's biggest mistake is ,they awaken the peaceful nation (phillipines) to step up again against threat ..phillipines doesn't want any war again..but if the enemy insist ..we were not yield nor surrender to any..
    Mark my word
