Inflation Impacts Domestic Tourism In Japan | World Business Watch | WION
Golden Week, Japan’s longest holiday, is traditionally a time for both domestic and international travel. However, this year, inflation and soaring prices are reducing the enthusiasm for domestic trips. A recent survey shows only 20.9% of Japanese respondents plan to travel during the holiday, down 5.6% from last year. One major factor is the 16% increase in hotel rates in Japan’s five major cities compared to 2024. Now the in addition the depreciation of the Japanese yen which has lost a third of its value since 2022 is driving up the cost of living from food to utilities. The rising costs are straining the wallets of locals curbing their travel plans. While domestic travel is slowing, Japan is experiencing an influx of international tourists. In 2024, Japan recorded over 36.8 million tourist arrivals, surpassing the prepandemic peak of 32 million in 2019. This boom is primarily attributed to the weaker yen which has made Japan a more affordable destination for foreign travelers. However, the rise in inbound tourism has led to higher hotel demand and prices making it even more difficult for locals to afford stays in popular tourist areas. Despite the economic strain, foreign tourism is expected to continue growing with the government aiming to double arrivals to 60 million by 2013. While Japan’s tourist hotspots are thriving, there is increasing push back from local residents. Over overcrowding, traffic violations, and unruly behavior from some visitors are raising concerns in major cities and tourist destinations such as Kyoto and near Mount Fuji. In response to these challenges, authorities authorities are exploring ways to manage tourism sustainably. Meanwhile, as local residents struggle with inflation, traveling abroad is becoming increasingly unattainable for many, with international trips now considered a luxury. Despite these issues, some Japanese holiday makers are accepting the reality of higher costs with the average Golden Week spending slightly rising to $21 this year. [Music]
