one in 10 people in Japan are now aged 80 or more and almost a third of its population is over 65 Japan now has the world’s oldest population and on top of that the fertility weight in Japan fell to a record low of 1.2 Which is far below the replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman if the births continue to decline the consequences would be disastrous taxes would rise and Social Security coffers would shrink Japanese children would lack Fe peed interaction and towns would quickly empty out although from 1990 onwards the government started paying Direct Cash allowances for even having a single child the results so far have not been so successful
