SVELATO: l’auto elettrica da 17.000 dollari della BYD che UCCIDERÀ il 40% delle vendite di auto i…
BYD’s game plan in Japan is all about going electric and high-tech and it’s making traditional Japanese automakers cry uncle Right now BYD has got stores popping up all over Japan – we’re talking nearly 130 locations They’re selling cars that actually make sense for the Japanese market: the Yuan Plus the Seal the Dolphin, and the Seal 07EV With sweet deals like three years of free charging and lifetime battery warranties plus just solid products overall BYD actually beat Toyota in pure electric vehicle sales in Japan last year For a foreign brand that only sells electric cars to come into Japan’s backyard and take down Toyota in just three years? That’s pretty impressive stuff But BYD isn’t stopping there They’re doubling down on the Japanese market and they’re about to drop something big Recently photos leaked online of this camouflaged BYD electric K-car This little guy looks completely different from anything BYD’s made before – it’s clearly designed specifically for Japan The car’s just a tiny bit bigger than the Wuling Hongguang Mini has this super thin triangular window on the A-pillar for better visibility regular doors up front and sliding doors in the back It looks pretty boxy but don’t let that fool you – there’s plenty of space inside BYD is obviously gunning for Japan’s most protected market: K-cars Word on the street is this little electric car will cost around 2.5 million yen which comes out to about 125000 yuan Soon as this news broke it made the front page of the Nikkei Economic News The headline basically said BYD’s electric K-car is targeting 40% of Japan’s domestic market You can tell from the headline alone just how seriously Japanese media is taking this whole thing Japanese outlets are saying BYD’s first electric K-car could completely reshape Japan’s K-car market Here’s the thing about K-cars in Japan – they’re huge The Japanese auto market is split between regular cars and these yellow-plate lightweight vehicles K-cars have strict size requirements: can’t be longer than 3.4 meters max four seats can’t carry more than 350 kilograms and the engine can’t be bigger than 0.66 liters They’re basically low-displacement four-seater senior citizen cars But Japanese people love these things because they’re cheap fuel-efficient perfect for narrow streets easy to park, low purchase tax cheap insurance and great gas mileage K-cars make up about 40% of Japan’s entire auto market – they sold 1.745 million units last year In terms of sales volume K-cars are basically the last bit of dignity Japanese automakers have left It’s their safe space And now BYD is crashing the party If BYD can grab even 10% of that market they’d be looking at a 5% boost in their automotive revenue That’s one tasty piece of pie But here’s what’s really wild – the K-car market is still mostly gas-powered Out of those 1.74 million K-cars sold last year only about 40000 were electric That’s basically nothing Why is Japan’s K-car market still stuck in the gas age? Simple – because Japanese electric cars are trash The fact that these tiny cars aren’t electric is something Chinese people just can’t wrap their heads around What makes it even worse is Japan’s energy situation is a complete mess This tiny island nation still relies on thermal power for about 70% of their electricity But they have to import all their natural gas and coal which keeps electricity prices sky-high And their nuclear power? Well just look at Fukushima and you’ll get the picture Bottom line is whether it’s thermal or nuclear power Japan is way behind the curve electricity is expensive and their electric vehicle adoption rate is pathetically low – even lower than India’s So why is BYD jumping into this mess? Well they’re bringing fast charging to their K-car While Japanese domestic electric cars are stuck at 40kW charging power BYD is cranking it up to 100kW – that’s on par with regular electric cars and light-years ahead of the competition We’re talking 20kWh battery 180 kilometers of range and 30 minutes to charge to 80%. Plus BYD is loaded with features that blow away domestic brands: heat pump air conditioning full smart operation and Japanese people’s favorite – the rotating screen BYD is also putting their Denza Eye C system in the K-car with automatic braking lane keeping and auto parking as standard features They’re basically dragging Japanese K-cars kicking and screaming into the assisted driving era This car launches next year and industry insiders think BYD’s K-car could easily crack the top three in Japan’s electric K-car sales Some Japanese industry folks are already crying about how Japan’s golden age of manufacturing is over forever China is leading the electric vehicle revolution and now Chinese automakers are invading Japan’s automotive sanctuary BYD’s strategy is pretty straightforward – crush the competition with superior products use economies of scale adapt their approach to different markets and within a few years they can dominate a completely new market Besides the Japan-specific K-car BYD also launched the Shark pickup truck in South America and that’s doing pretty well too Beating competitors at their own game – that’s something only Chinese companies can pull off in manufacturing these days The Japanese have done their homework on BYD They’ve torn apart plenty of Chinese electric cars Their conclusion? If Japanese automakers tried to build the exact same electric car it would cost them twice as much as Chinese companies This revelation has got them pretty rattled At this rate, within 10 years China won’t just crush Japanese cars in the Chinese market – they’ll march into Japan and steal market share on their home turf The automotive industry is basically Japan’s last claim to fame and even that’s fading fast At this pace Chinese companies are going to replace Japanese industries one by one Japan used to be able to hide behind their domestic market but now even their home base is getting raided Add in all the financial and national debt bombs waiting to explode and it looks like the only industry where Japan might maintain global recognition is the adult video market Everything else? Well they’re pretty much out of luck Back in 2005 BYD Auto held a launch event in Jinan Shandong where they unveiled this compact sedan called the F3 Now if you took one look at this thing you’d notice it had a Toyota Corolla front end a Honda Fit rear and a Vitz waistline I mean this was basically the ultimate mashup of Japanese car reverse engineering you know what I’m saying? But here’s the kicker – this car was flying off the lots Why? Well, back then the cheapest Toyota Corolla would run you about 140000 yuan, but the F3? That bad boy started at just 79800 yuan When you’re talking prices like that nobody really cares if it’s a knockoff or not right? Fast forward to today and BYD has been making waves in the Japanese car market for almost three years now When BYD first announced they were entering Japan man the whole country was sweating bullets Here’s this company that used to copy their homework and now they’re showing up at their doorstep ready to throw down The biggest publishing house in Japan actually bought a BYD Seal tore it apart piece by piece and got a whole team of experts to study it They ended up publishing this massive research report about it Twenty years ago Wang Chuanfu and his engineers were taking apart Mercedes and Corollas to figure out how they worked Twenty years later BYD has basically graduated and is now knocking on their former teachers’ front door I mean that’s gotta make you nervous right? We have no experience in making cars ourselves And we certainly can’t develop them in isolation We need to humbly learn from excellent automobile companies We bought more than a dozen units in one go Popular cars in the market For everyone to disassemble During the disassembly process, study and learn Look at the popular vehicles in the market How they were manufactured At first, everyone was afraid to dismantle the cars So I chose a Mercedes And picked up a wrench Forcefully scratched around the car in a circle Dismantling it to reassure everyone We repeatedly took it apart and reassembled it Install and dismantle again If there’s anything unclear, hold an on-site meeting right away Until everything is fully understood Over a year passed We finally produced our first mass-produced F3 Within 14 months of its launch, we sold 100,000 units Won the sales championship in China’s sedan market in 2009 This was the first time for a Chinese brand Looking back now We are truly grateful for the support from our first batch of car owners This has given us tremendous confidence We can say that without the F3 BYD wouldn’t be what it is today
