The comments came via Truth Social, where Trump accused Japan of having a “massive rice shortage” but “refusing to take our rice.” The 90-day tariff pause is set to expire on July 9, and Trump says “we’ll just be sending them a letter” — signaling new tariffs could be imminent.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi responded diplomatically, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to protect its farm sector and engage in “sincere” negotiations. Meanwhile, U.S. Census data shows Japan has already imported over $100 million in American rice this year, contradicting Trump’s claim.

    On the trade front don’t know what Trump gains if Japan imports American rice. US imports 100s billions $ worth cars/parts every year from Japanese companies. US will do better even if half of them relocate to US compared to rice exports

    Trump is back to his dumbo ways of threatening tariffs on countries over foolish matters like food exports.

    Trump doesn't realize that Japan has a Supply Management System for rice where cultivation and production are heavily regulated in order to maintain self sufficiency and ensure a high quality product.

    The Americans don't realize that Japan imports rice from other countries, particularly South Korean where its rice has comparable quality to Japanese counterparts.

    If Trump doesn't stop picking on Japan over a cereal crop like rice, he will likely wage war on Canada next as they also use Supply Management for its dairy, poultry, and eggs.

    Trump says that small countries that do not even possess nuclear weapons are equivalent to colonies. Japan has been exploited by America?? The United States has used laws to destroy Japan's semiconductor business, and now we have no money even to buy rice, our staple food. If you drive an American car in Japan, an accident will happen in 30 minutes. It would be good for Trump to try driving an American car on Japan's narrow roads. We Japanese have bought what America told us to buy, and have passed the bills they asked us to pass. And yet they say 'Japan is exploiting America'??? Are you siding with Russia and China?? A dictatorial country like America.
