In this insightful session on Shubhra Ranjan IAS Study Channel, Shubhra Ranjan delves into the historical parallels between Japan’s Meiji Restoration and India’s current challenges amid US tariffs imposed by President Trump. Drawing from T N Ninan’s thought-provoking article, Shubhra Ranjan explains how Commodore Matthew Perry’s 1853 arrival in Japan exposed its technological backwardness and forced it to open up to trade and Western influences. This “Perry moment” sparked confusion but ultimately led to the Meiji Restoration in 1867 under Emperor Meiji. Within a generation, Japan transformed into an industrial powerhouse, defeating China and Russia in wars, and emerging as a global leader.
Shubhra Ranjan highlights key lessons for India: Just as Japan turned bullying into a catalyst for reform, India must avoid emotional reactions to Trump’s “indefensible” tariffs and instead address its vulnerabilities.

  2. What about current tarriffs on Japan
Japan has fully surrendered in front of USA even after deal Trump raised tarriffs from 10 percent to 15 percent
And we all know how US destroyed japanese economy in 90s
This is what happens when your whole country security depends on someone else even though Japan pays billions to US every year for its protection still Japan has been used as a colony
US troops have thousands of s*xual assaults cases against Japanese women but still Japan can't do a thing against them

I think Japan is the last country we should be taking ideas for how to tackle tarriffs
What kind of deal has Japan made currently they will impose 0 percent tarriffs and US will impose 15 percent on their products and Japan will invest 550 billion USD of which 90 percent profits will be taken by US
And it's not the era of 1850 or 1900s the whole maritime trade has changed completely

Although I agree in manufacturing sector we are behind and that is because of too much government and bureaucracy interference in manufacturing they come every several weeks in name of inspection and take money
And if you have subsidy then you are struck they say we will file a case against you and your subsidy will stop so pay us

  3. Are you trying to say that india should become a dictator country and should have only single party , single government??? So that it will become stable and can grow faster like china and become a friend of USA rather than taking an independent and individual stand
