Royals in Japan: Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh watch sumo wrestling in Tokyo

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were transfixed as they watched a sumo wrestling match on their first joint visit to Japan.

The couple had specifically requested to watch the spectacle in Tokyo. After saying beforehand that she was “very excited”, the Duchess used binoculars to get a closer view of the action in the ring.

When told that spectators sometimes threw cushions at the participants, she laughed and responded: “I might restrain myself.”

It was the penultimate engagement of the day for the Edinburghs as they embarked on a four-day visit, taking in both Tokyo and Osaka, at the request of the Government as it aims to strengthen ties with Japan.
