I visited Japan back in 2018 and just so happened to catch the airing of tournament of power finale on TV in my hotel room. They showed it in the morning in between a bunch of other cartoons, it struck me how much of an afterthought it was, no fanfare in the street, nothing just another kids cartoon (I guess that's normal behaviour). But I was surprised how far down the pecking order of other anime and manga Dragon Ball was at the time, they are really spoiled for choice out there. I think Ecuador loves Dragon Ball more than Japan.

And this is over roughly 40 years. But let's say 30 years to be further safe. So on average, let's say $1 billion/yr. Japan's GDP for one year is roughly $4.19 trillion. That's around 4,190 times as much as the Dragon Ball franchise makes. Still, being 1/4000th or so of a nation's economy is huge. But certainly not a major factor in a country's economic survival. It's like if you made $4,000 one month, but then were paid $3,999 the next month. Also, it appears that the Dragon Ball video games make more than the anime itself, so if we are speaking strictly economically, a new DB video game release may have more of an impact.
