Japan is facing one of the fastest population declines in the developed world. As the country’s birth rate continues to fall, hundreds of elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, and even universities are shutting their doors forever. In this documentary, we travel across Japan to explore abandoned schools, struggling universities, empty classrooms, and rural communities that are disappearing as Japan’s demographic crisis deepens.
How does a shrinking population affect education in Japan? What happens to students, teachers, local communities, and entire towns when schools close? Can immigration, international students, or government policies reverse Japan’s population decline? What does this mean for the future of living in Japan?
This documentary explores the reality of Japan beyond the tourist destinations, examining the country’s low birth rate, aging population, labor shortages, depopulation, rural decline, and the difficult choices facing Japanese society. Through interviews, on-location footage, and real-life stories, we look at one of the biggest social problems in Japan today.

Yokosuka?! I was just there last month on a fishing trip. 😢😢😢
Japan has a massive population even with the declining birth rate.
The issue is everyone lives in cramped spaces in the greater Tokyo area (population of 40 million people – more than the population in Canada).
If the population spread out places wouldn’t be so barren. However for whatever reason the government doesn’t see the value in it.
Anything but be welcoming towards immigrants to help boost the population. i get the beauty behind being a monolith culture like in India or China, but its okay to relax with traditions so future generations can thrive.
I’m so shy that having a whole school to myself, especially the library? Would have been a dream for young me.
People can't afford to have kids, that's why Japan have low birth rate and population decline. If the LDP fix the wages then Japan can fix the low birth rate and population decline.
So sad. I taught in the JET program in an Osaka high school in the 2010s. It has already closed down.
It's so surreal since Tokyo is the world's most populated city and yet people still go there for school and services rather than their own hometown
In the near future there will be couples wanting to move to the countryside to afford a house to raise a family in, but there won't be nearby schools for their children.
If I was a teacher (or more entrepreneurial hah), I'd make a proper international school which only teaches online. That way parents would be able to live wherever.
School” we want children, but only Japanese children born from Japanese looks like parents “
I think it's cool to have gone to school. It's a unique experience and exposure to a really cool culture…if I were born Japanese…id appreciate some cool stuff. I mean, it's so calm and peaceful. The only thing there is is less competition during exams. You probably could take the exams from a place of less competition to get into elite Schools.
Migrants from allied Asian countries or dying economy?
Thank you for talking about the topic!
Might be a me problem, but your mid video patreon advertisement really sounds like a you are ending the video. I had a jump scare when I realized you are still talking in the background. Also, a small nitpick 10:21 small year mistake in there
That said… Population decline is one thing, but I really wonder what's gonna happen with AI, and if that's gonna end up replacing teacher jobs.
And most people don’t want foreign labour? Japan is only forwarding its own decline.
Random idea: but what if we took these old abandoned schools and turned them into Japanese language schools for foreigners with the idea of “experiencing japanese school life while learning japanese”
Japan doesn’t need private universities. So many issues surrounding them. Good riddance!
thank goodness the women only universities are failing and going co-ed now. should happen everywhere hopefully.
Test tube babies is the solution ,
If this keeps on going.. ALT jobs will drop significantly… that's not a good sign for many who are trying to enter Japan for professional and personal reasons
Result of governments telling women to get an education, work and party rather than having a family
How many teachers'salaries does it require for the one student school? Is that a good use of tax payer money?
its the same in most countries. alot of schools and towns are closing coz of lower population growth. this a global thing not just japan.
neoliberalism killing japan.
People dont want children due to high cost of living
Japan needs to stop forcing men to work 15 hour days and punishing pregnant workers.
If the data I found are correct, the situation will deteriorate even further over the next decade, as the annual number of births fell by more than 150,000 between 2020 and 2025.
This is happening all over the world. In America, Less people are having children, and those that do have kids are moving away. No kids no students which means no money for schools. It's that simple, and I have seen a few schools I went to as a child shut down forever. This is becoming almost apocalyptic.
Your government is killing your own people cause the politicians are corrupt scums. High inflation, low pay, terrible corporate management!, Americas dog, cant sell military equipment, US Treasuries?!!! Disgraceful! Baka! Japanese government continues to ruin its people since the kofun period!!!make everyone suffer post ww2! Foolish policies! Make Nippon great again! In a smart way!
1:40 Is that Sergio Ramos?
Japanese people should have kids. They should reconsider it.
Thats really tough
İ wonder how Palestine, to be exact, the Ghazza strip, despite being a continuous set of densely populated cities, that are carpet bombed regularly and constantly deprived of territories, have the highest birth rates in such conditions?
Ghazza have high unemployment rate, it doesn't have a lot of economic opportunities, there isn't any industry.
Love your content! You always make very interesting videos ! Keep it up 👍🏼
Maybe birth rates could be fixed by not giving money away, but providing parents with all necessities for children development for free, like housing, education, nutrition etc or by increasing the salary of a bot fathers and mothers to raise the children?
But İ doubt that any company would want to increase the salary of workers who have children.

Ironically, there are some famous boarding schools from outside Japan (Harrow's, Rugby, etc.) that have built fancy campuses in the Japan countryside to target the rich.
That was painful to watch, capitalism has really gutted Japan.
When Japan will go completely zero population or near extinction in future. We could turn entire Japan into a Farm Nation for the whole world.
They need me for repopulation duties.
I think Japans school system has a lot to do with causing the population decline. As is the issue with many countries. I don't want to put my child into the meat grinder like I was. Society needs to change fundamentally worldwide.
I think the problem is that the japanese are too smart. They KNOW that the economy is shit, and they will struggle if they raise families. Meanwhile, in other countries, people KNOW the economy is shit, and STILL they pump out three, four, five freaking children, and they plunge themselves into debt. Sure, Japanese population might be dwindling, but on the upside, the country is amazing, and crimes are very low. The absolute opposite of countries that are overflooding with people who don't know what the hell they're doing.
They work themselves to death in Japan. It is a blessing not to put a child into such a situation.
Basically, Japan is now living in Children of Men era.
If the Red Book of UN have an entry for human nation and ethnic group, Japan will be at the top. It is what it is.
